SVG to STL: turn your drawing into a 3D model
Choose an SVG file and get a solid ready to print: a logo on a plate, a keychain, a cookie stamp, a sign or a stencil. Filled shapes and lines both come through, in the drawing's own colours if you like. Your file stays in your browser.
How to use it
- Press Choose a file… and pick an SVG. Until you do, an example shows.
- Set the width; the height follows the drawing.
- Under Shape, choose the drawing standing out (on its own or on a plate), engraved in a plate, or cut right through as a stencil.
- Drag in the 3D view to look round it. Under the settings you see how big it comes out and how many shapes it found.
- Press Download STL. It lies flat, ready for your slicer.
What comes through
- Filled shapes: paths, rectangles, circles, ellipses and polygons, with their holes (the inside of an O stays open).
- Lines (strokes) become bands as thick as they are drawn, with round or square ends; or leave them out.
- White shapes drawn over others are cut out, as they look; or make them too.
- Groups and transforms, as drawing programs write them. Text that is still text is not read: turn it into outlines (paths) first.
Good to know for printing
- On an FDM printer with a 0.4 mm nozzle, keep the thinnest parts of the drawing at least 0.8 mm wide at the size you print.
- A raised drawing of 1 to 2 mm on a plate of 2 to 3 mm prints fast; pause at the top of the plate to change the filament colour.
- Simple drawings print best: very fine detail and thousands of small shapes make large files and slow prints.
Questions
- Is SVG to 3D free?
- Yes. Try as many drawings as you like without an account. To download the STL you get a link by mail, which makes your free WAZO3D account at the same time; members download straight away.
- Is my file uploaded?
- No. The SVG is read in your own browser and goes nowhere. Only the STL you ask for is made, and only when you ask for it.
- Why does part of my drawing not show?
- Text that is still text, embedded pictures (PNG or JPEG inside the SVG) and effects such as blur are not read. Turn text into outlines in your drawing program; a picture has no shape to make solid.
- Can I use its colours?
- Yes: under Look, choose the drawing's own colours, and every colour becomes a part of its own. In the WAZO3D editor you can paint them as you like.
- Can I change the model afterwards?
- Open it in the WAZO3D editor: add a hole for a key ring, a stand or a handle, combine it with other parts, and check it for printing.
Do more with it in WAZO3D
Put your drawing on a model of your own, make a stamp with a handle, a sign with holes for screws, check it for printing and export it all at once. WAZO3D is powerful 3D modelling without the complexity, in your browser.
